01 — What we do

If it plugs in,
we support it

Most offices end up with four or five vendors: one for the network, one for phones, one for the copier, someone's nephew for the laptops. Nobody owns the whole picture, and every problem starts with figuring out whose problem it is. We'd rather be the one number you call.

A1

Desktop & helpdesk

WindowsmacOSEmailPrinters

The daily friction: a laptop that won't boot, Outlook that stopped syncing, a printer that vanished from the network, someone locked out an hour before a client call. We take these remotely first because that's faster, and come to the office when the problem is physical.

Also the lifecycle work most offices forget until it bites — imaging and setting up machines for new hires, wiping and recovering them when people leave, keeping software licensed and patched.

A2

Desk moves & office relocations

After hoursCablingFull office moves

Whether it's five desks shifting across the floor or sixty people moving to a new building, the technology is the part that decides whether Monday morning works. We label and photograph every setup before it comes apart, disconnect it properly, and rebuild it at the other end — monitors, docks, cables, phones, peripherals — then test each station before we leave.

We schedule this for evenings and weekends by default. A move during business hours means a floor of people sitting idle, and that costs more than the move does. We also handle new desk builds, floor reconfigurations, and the cabling that comes with them.

A3

Networks, WiFi & firewalls

Palo AltoCiscoFortinetJuniper

Design, installation, and ongoing maintenance of wired and wireless networks: switch configuration, VLAN segmentation, VPN access for remote staff, firewall rules and policy reviews, and structured cabling.

For WiFi that drops in the corner conference room, we survey the space rather than guessing — access point placement in a New York office is usually a walls-and-interference problem, not a hardware problem. We work with Palo Alto, Cisco, Fortinet, and Juniper, and we're not limited to them; tell us what you already own.

A4

Servers & cloud

Microsoft 365Windows ServerBackupsMigrations

Server builds and maintenance, virtualization, Microsoft 365 tenant administration, mailbox and file migrations, and moving shared drives to SharePoint or OneDrive without losing permissions along the way.

We also do the unglamorous part properly: configuring backups and then actually testing that they restore. A backup nobody has restored from is a guess, not a backup.

A5

Phones & telephony

VoIPCall routingCarrier liaison

VoIP platform setup and administration, handset configuration, extension and user changes, call routing and voicemail, and relocating phone systems as part of a move. We'll deal with the carrier on your behalf, which is usually the part nobody in the office wants to own.

A6

Staffing & projects

On-site daysRolloutsCover

An engineer at your office on set days each week, or a team assembled for a defined piece of work: a hardware refresh, an operating system rollout, an office build-out, or covering your internal IT person's vacation or leave.

Temporary and project-based, with no obligation to keep anyone on once the work is done.

A7

Everything else

AVAccess controlReferrals

Conference room AV, badge and access systems, copiers, digital signage, the strange legacy box in the closet that nobody has logged into since 2019. Ask us. If it isn't something we do, we'll point you to a vendor in the city we'd use ourselves rather than sending you back to a search results page.

02 — How it works

No mystery,
no surprise invoice

Four steps, and you know the cost before the third one.

01

You call or write

You reach a person, not a ticket queue that routes to a form. Describe the problem however you'd describe it to a colleague — sorting out what's actually wrong is our job, not yours.

02

We scope it

For anything beyond a quick fix, we look at what you have before quoting. Sometimes that's a phone call, sometimes a short site visit. Either way we'd rather find the surprises now than mid-project.

03

You get a written quote

In writing, before work starts, with what's included and what isn't. If the scope changes once we're in, we tell you and re-quote rather than adding it to the bill quietly.

04

We do it and document it

Disruptive work goes in evenings or weekends. When it's finished you get a plain-language summary of what changed, what to watch, and any passwords or configuration you now own.

03 — Pricing

Three ways
to work with us

Most IT firms in this city won't tell you how they charge until they've had you on a discovery call. Here's ours up front. Which one fits depends on how often things break and whether you have anyone internal.

Hourly

Occasional problems

You call when something breaks, we bill for the time it takes. Best if you have a small team, few moving parts, and no appetite for a monthly commitment. No minimum retainer and no obligation to call us again.

Monthly plan

Ongoing coverage

A flat monthly fee covering support for an agreed number of users or devices, so the cost is predictable and you're not weighing whether a problem is "worth" calling about. Sized to your headcount after we've seen the environment.

Fixed-price project

Defined work

Desk moves, office relocations, hardware refreshes, migrations, network installs. Quoted as one number for the whole job. If we underestimate it, that's our problem, not a change order.

We're happy to say which of these we think fits before you commit to anything — including telling you that you don't need a monthly plan. Overselling a small office a managed contract it doesn't need is how firms in this business lose clients in year two.

04 — Why SHIELX

Built on
trading‑floor
standards

We built this business supporting brokers, asset managers, private equity firms, and banks — environments where an hour of downtime is measured in money and nobody accepts "we're looking into it" as an update. That shapes how we work: fix the cause rather than the symptom, document what changed, and tell you the bad news early.

Most of our clients now are ordinary Manhattan offices rather than trading desks. They get the same standard, without paying enterprise rates for it.

06 — Where we work

Based in
Hudson Yards

We work out of Hudson Yards, which puts us within a short ride of most of Midtown, Chelsea, the Flatiron district, and the West Side — the offices we can reach fastest. Manhattan as a whole is our home ground.

We also take work in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Tell us where you are and we'll be straight about whether we're the right call or whether someone closer would serve you better.

Remote support covers anywhere. A good portion of what we fix never needs anyone in the room.

07 — Questions

Asked often
enough to answer here

Do you offer IT support without a long-term contract?
Yes. A lot of our work is hourly or per-visit with nothing ongoing attached. If predictable monthly coverage suits you better we'll set that up, but it isn't a condition of us taking your call, and we'll tell you if we think you don't need one.
Do you do desk moves on evenings and weekends?
Yes, and we'd usually recommend it. Moving desks during business hours means people sitting around unable to work, which costs more than the move. A Friday evening or Saturday move means everyone comes in Monday to a setup that already works.
How quickly can you get to our office?
It depends on where you are and what else is booked that day, so we won't publish a number we can't hold to every time. Call us and we'll tell you honestly when we can be there. Many issues we can start on remotely within minutes while an on-site visit is being arranged.
Can you work alongside our existing IT person?
Often that's the best arrangement. Your internal person knows the business and handles daily requests; we come in for specialist work — firewall changes, server migrations, office moves — or to cover holidays and leave. We're not trying to replace anyone.
Do you support Macs as well as Windows?
Yes. Mixed environments are the norm in New York offices. We support both, plus the Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace layers most businesses run on top of them.
What size companies do you work with?
Small and mid-size offices, from a handful of people up to a few hundred seats. We're well suited to small and mid-size projects. If you need a multi-year enterprise program with a dedicated account team, we'll say so rather than stretch.
What does it cost?
It depends which of the three arrangements fits — hourly, a flat monthly plan, or a fixed price for a defined project. We give you a written quote before work starts, so the number you approve is the number you pay. If the scope changes mid-job we re-quote rather than adding it quietly.
Can you help with a new office build-out?
Yes — cabling, network and WiFi design, server and workstation setup, phone systems, and coordinating with your contractor or landlord's building management. The earlier you bring us in the cheaper it is; retrofitting cable into a finished space costs considerably more than running it before the walls close.
